If you have a felony conviction in your past, one good option for work is truck driving. There is some education required, but for many it is very much worth the work. There’s no guarantee of a job for anyone these days, but if you’re an ex-felon, you might seriously think about getting a truck driving job.
The first step is to get a CDL license and training. There are many trucking schools that offer classes to help. Try to get as many endorsements as possible on your license. This can open up more job opportunities because you can drive more types of loads. This is common sense, but some people don’t think about this and it can set you ahead of the competition.
After you have what you need, it’s time to start your job search. Remember that smaller, local trucking and shipping companies will usually have more opportunities for felons. You may want to try them first. You should also go to local truck stops and pick up trucking magazines. Check the jobs sections in these. Many times you’ll find that jobs listed there aren’t found anywhere else. While at the truck stop, you can talk to other drivers who might give you leads.
When talking to trucking companies if you get an interview, honesty is the best policy. This may not seem like the case, but it is. You should be open about your convictions. Be positive about your future. You never know – the company may have a special program to help felons.
If you take the proper steps, truck driving can be a very good job opportunity for felons.
